)If not already done - remove ground strap.

)Remove side plates and differential as described previously.

)Remove snap ring retainer on main shaft (located in differential main case). See photo #23.

)Slide reverse gear (has a collar) to the rear.

)Unscrew the main shaft and separate it into two pieces. See photo #23.

)Remove reverse gear and snap ring. See photo #23.

)Pull out main shaft half to rear, out of bell housing. Don't worry about the oil seal, you're going to replace it.

)On swing axle models flatten lock plates and remove the four pinion
shaft bearing retainer bolts.

)On IRS models, unscrew (counterclockwise) the large round nut used as the pinion shaft bearing retainer. If VW tool isn't available it can be tapped loose using a straight screwdriver or blunt chisel.

)Push out pinion shaft using removal tool or make up a screw-Jack arrangement. See Photo #24. Make note of shim arrangement if ring and pinion adjustment was all right. See photo #25.

)If gear or bearing show wear or damage, the reverse idler gear can be removed after the snap ring retainer is removed; then remove the woodruff key and take the reverse gear shaft and thrust washer out of the case.

)If necessary the reverse gear shaft needle bearings can be driven out using a drift or a socket after the securing bolt has been removed. See photo #26, opposite side of case.

)If the main drive shaft race shows evidence of wear, remove the bolt which secures the needle bearing and drive or press out with a drift or socket. See photo #26. Photo #27 shows location of reverse idler gear shaft (white arrow) and main shaft bearing (black arrow).

)on swing axle models remove differential side bearings from side plates or from differential (which ever the case may be - pry off using a wooden wedge or press off using a hydraulic press with suitable plate) check for wear.

)Remove clutch release bearing and disassemble release mechanism if necessary.

)Remove reverse selector fork and reverse sliding gear from reverse lover. See photo #28.

)Remove pinion adjustment shims from the drive pinion ball bearing, noting their thickness.

)Remove the locking screws of the first - second and third -
fourth selector forks and remove the first - second selector
