12)Always replace the 'O' ring seals, paper gaskets and outer oil seal. Coat '0' rings and oil seat lightly with oil before installation. Examine the bearing spacer outer surface for smoothness as the oil seal lip rides on it. Coat it with oil before installation. See photo #18.

13)Inspect axle and drum splines.

14)Coat fulcrum plates with lithium grease when installing them into differential side gears.

ON IRS MODELS:

1)Inspect ring gear for wear, chips, cracks, etc.

2)Check ring gear carrier for cracks.

3)Inspect tapered roller bearings and their race in side plate for wear. See photo #20.

4)Inspect differential side gears and thrust washers for gaulding and scoring.

ASSEMBLY IS IN REVERSE OF DISASSEMBLY

Tighten ring gear bolts to 43 ft. lbs. Peen over retainer pin for spyder gear shaft in differential. Reinsert lock wire if used. Use red loctite on ring gear bolts when rebuilding a high performance trans. On swing axle models tighten axle tube retainer nuts to 22 ft. lbs. There should be no play between axle tube and retainer. The axle tube should just move under its own weight. Gasket thickness will determine this clearance. (Remember step #9 on removing the axles.) Axle bearing cover bolts are tightened to 40 - 45 ft. lbs. Rear axle nut is tightened to 217 ft. lbs. If cotter key doesn't line up, tighten more until it does. Failure to tighten properly will result in an oil leak to brakes. If equipped with oil deflector and drip tube, be sure oil drip tube is tightly against brake drum to prevent oiling brakes. On IRS trans squeeze the snap ring with pliers on the CV joint connector flange and use new seal caps. Fill with 90 weight gear lube (80 weight in cold climates) fill to oil filler plug - approximately 51/2 Pints.

TRANSMSSION DISASSEMBLY

1)Remove axles as previously described.

2)Remove cradle from case (4 bolts and nuts).

3)Remove front shift housing with shift rod.

4)Mount transaxle on suitable stand if available.

5)On swing axle models pull the two outer shift rods out to lock the transmission (see photo #22.) Bend down lock plate washers and remove nuts (11/4") from pinion and main shafts.

6)On IRS models remove snap rings on main & pinion shafts. See photo #13.

7))Remove the nuts that secure the transmission case (sometimes called bearing housing) to the main case.
